The chiropractor that I had seen for years retired and sent out a letter stating that his patient records were now on file with Dr. Counselman. So, when the time came that my wife and I both had sore backs she called and made appointments for us both. Her appointment was first and things went well. On my first visit I almost walked out of the building before ever meeting the Doctor. The receptionist was using her extra polite voice but was still very rude to me because I had not filled out paperwork online. Even while I was filling out the paper paperwork, she kept making little comments about having told my wife on the phone and how much easier it would have been to do it online before I came in. Then, her and an older lady at the reception desk made loud conversation about how much of a pain it was to type up my paperwork. Fine ambassadors you have there, sir. Within days of my visit, I got an itemized bill in the mail for $xxx.xx. My wife called to inquire and was told that we shouldn’t have gotten that bill and to wait for a corrected bill after it had gone through insurance. Worrying that it would cost me this much each visit, I canceled my follow up and so did my wife while we waited for a corrected bill. After three weeks of waiting my wife called to inquire about the bill and possibly make an appointment for me as I was still in pain. I am not sure on the details of their conversation but my wife told me that they would be able to get me in today but that there were still bills outstanding for some kind of therapy. I was happy to get in to see the chiropractor but confused about what the therapy was so I called and asked to speak with whomever my wife had spoken to. When “Billing Lady” answered the phone I told her who I was and why I was calling. Her response was a very nasty, “yes, I wasted an hour talking to your wife about this already.” I then learned from her that some of what they offer is treatment and some of what they offer is therapy. She also made a point of repeating that different insurances pay differently. My question became, “If you know BC & BS doesn’t cover what you call therapy then shouldn’t you tell me that up front? The portion that my insurance didn’t cover was a machine that electrocutes your back; If that is billed differently you should warn your patients. The lady was quite rude and didn’t have a coherent explanation. Her attitude made me decide to cancel my appointment and find another chiropractor even though my back still hurts! When I spoke to Blue Cross & Blue Shield, they explained that the chiropractor office is basically billing it wrong; they should be coding things differently and this problem wouldn’t happen. Feeling perturbed, I went and got the $23.54 that I ‘owed’ in pennies and went into the office and paid my bill in cash. Needless to say, Billing Lady was as kind in person as she had been on the phone. The adjustment itself was ok. Having had only one visit it is hard to critique Dr. Counselman’s services. He may actually be an amazing chiropractor and worth the extra hassle. Still, I’m left thinking that if all of the chiropractors who worked in the same building and have recently retired gave Dr. Counselman their books of business, he should have plenty of patients. He should remember to shear those sheep and not skin them or he won’t have much of a flock left. A kind staff and up-front billing are just as important as the treatment.

I met with Dr. Counselman and he was great, always telling me what he was going to do before doing anything, making sure I was heard and that I understood what was needed to be done. After my appointment, I was able to have correct posture which really felt great again. The staff was great, I will be recommending to other vets back at the VA!
